[I posted this post on my old blog on October 24, 2012]
Ok, as one of my first rants on this blog, I’d like to start with something that everyone, including non kpop fans, are familiar with.
Yes, that’s right. Gangnam Style.
This rant wont be very long (frankly because i have a 3 page paper to write and it’s due tomorrow, and I haven’t even started it yet….yes, procrastination. The end of us all…), but, I do want to talk about this.
Now, for those of you who may know me personally or outside of this blog (via Tumblr, Facebook, Twitter, Weibo, AFF, and other various sites that i’m on) know of my feelings for this song. For those of you who dont, I honestly love this song. They song is fun and easy to dance to. The video is funny a quirky and exactly what I would expect from PSY. So, really, its not the song, in fact, that I have a problem with. I mean honestly, how can I get mad at such an amazing song and video. But it’s the fake kpop ‘fans’ that have branched out from this song.
Me and my friends go to these anime conventions throughout the year that are held in our city, and while we’re there, we tend to find fellow kpop fans. And all kpop/cpop/jrock/jpop fans know that when you find a fellow fan its like finding a long lost sister/brother.
The fact that kpop is becoming so immensely popular is a good thing. I live in the US and I support the Asian Invasion 10000000000000000000000000000000%! And who knew, of all people, PSY would be the one to make kpop worldwide.
With Kpop becoming so popular so fast there are people that I call ‘newbies’ that think they know more than the person who has been a fan of kpop for 3+ years. Now, not all Kpop newbies are like this. Some know that they don’t know everything about kpop, but they’re willing to branch out and learn more about it. But, then you have the ones who have been into kpop for only a few months and think they know everything about it and it’s profoundly annoying.
Now, me personally, I got into kpop in the summer of 2010. So i wouldn’t consider myself a newbie but I also would consider myself as much as a veteran as other people I have met as well. I met some people who have been into kpop all the way back in the 90′s (and of course these people are fairly older than me because i wasnt born until 95′) and these people seem to be just as annoyed with the newbies as I am.
The role Gangnam Style plays in this: People who meet me and find out I like kpop would be like:
“OMG! I love kpop too!”
“Oh really? No kidding?! Who do you like?/What’s some of your favorite songs?” And you know what they say? (I think you know where I’m going with this…)
“Oh, I like Gangnam Style by PSY.”
When I hear this, Im just sitting there like “-______- …. Just stop right there.”
But the dialogue continues as:
“Oh, I like Gangnam Style too….But who else do you like?”
“…………….um……”
“You know, like Super Junior, SNSD, 2NE1, 2PM, BIGBANG, SHINee, Dalmatian, CN BLUE, FT Island, LEDApple, Miss A, Brown Eyed Girls, Cross Gene, VIXX, EXO, f(x)….I could go on forever. Do you like any of them?”
And they would say no and I would walk away pissed like, seriously dude? Seriously? You really just wasted like 5 minutes of my life that I could have spent talking to someone who actually knows kpop and could engage in the conversation with me.
In the end, Im happy there’s more kpop fans then there were when I first got into it and I’m happy that music, like kpop, can bring thousand and millions of people together despite of language, race, sex, religion….that people can come together and connect with one another. Kpop, and music in itself, is a powerful force. Language is no longer a barrier, frankly because people don’t care what language you speak. As long as the music is good, you’re bound to gain followers. Just, if you want to be a fan of kpop be sure to branch out and explore the whole genre and not just one song and one artist. not all kpop songs are like Gangnam Style. There are ballads, dance, hip-hop, rock, rap, pop…all incorporated into kpop and I would be more than happy to help you on your journey of discovering kpop. If you need references or want recommendations, contact me an I would be more than happy to help.
With that said, I’m done with my rant. Thanks for reading you guys. For the next one, I’m probably gonna talk about fanwars because that’s been getting on my nerves too, but until then seeya! (I have to get my homework done now >.<)
